I suffer from life-long weigh fluctuation. I have been over 200 pounds and under 150 (ok for a week). I have done the south beach diet (all meat, before they had all the fabulous products they have now), weight watchers, vegan gluten free diet, mediterian diet, all ice cream and pizza diet. The last one, while fun, is not good if you need to fit in your skinny jeans, or your fat ones for that matter. I have felt the mental and physical effects of being worried about food’s impact on my waste line and my wardrobe. I have gone through periods where I have eliminated food groups, and all I did was think about them all day long. What I realized from this, and other diets, is that diets don’t work. You cannot eliminate something your body essentially needs to function forever if you love it. It’s unnatural to say, “I’m never eating gelato again”. That’s just wrong. What I’ve learned is that you have to eat clean foods. What does that mean? Foods as close to their original state as possible. Fresh fruits and veggies. Foods that have ingredients I can understand, not weird chemical names. Fresh breads and organic dairy products. I also have to watch my stress level. If I am stressed from writing too many blog entries, I might crave different foods than if I am relaxed. I make different decisions if I don’t eat at regular times, and if I get outside my routine. The result, weight gain.
So what I’ve finally figured out is eating organic foods and keeping a good routine is working the best for me. I think you need to see what works for you, but trying to keep a good lifestyle will keep you diet free forever.
