Disability is referred to any condition where the person is unable to perform his bodily functions normally. Children with disability are often referred as special children. Physical disability was re-coined into a phrase of physically challenged and mental disability was re-coined into a phrase of mentally challenged. Handling child disabilities can be a task especially to handle the emotional upswings and downswings of the child. A physically challenged child feels incompetent at times. He/she feels that they are unable to play or work like their peers. Many a times, they may be subjected to ridiculous comments. As a parent one needs to be super strong in raising children with disabilities. You need to pamper them and spoil them but do not ignore them either. It is important that you raise your child into an independent individual. Teach them to overcome their disabilities. Teach them not to be bogged down by their inability to be like others.
It is very important to develop a feeling of self respect in your child. He or she should not feel inferior because of their disability. One needs to understand that if the child develops an inferiority complex, he or she may become withdrawn and would avoid meeting people. Such children suffer from low self esteem and deflated ego. They may suffer from the small syndrome. Inferiority complex will make them sulk; in extreme cases the child becomes revengeful and destructive. It will help the child if you teach it to perform its daily tasks without any support. Let him/her feel like a complete individual who is not dependent on anybody for his movement or daily activities.
Handling children with mental disorder or handling mentally challenged children is a great responsibility. These children are very intelligent and observant. Due to incomplete formation of their body, certain parts of their brain remain under developed. One should be kind to these children. Each of these mentally challenged children have a gift, some are extremely creative while others are logical. One should tap their potential and make them feel special.
