IBS: A Silent Medical Problem

Irritable bowel syndrome is perhaps one of the most mystifying medical conditions, since patients health appears to be normal after undergoing various tests and a complete physical examination. This is a condition caused by a disruption of signals in the brain to properly digest foods in an organized manner causing gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, nausea, constipation and diarrhea that all tend to disappear while sleeping. For someone with this disorder, food is either digested too quickly or slowly, resulting in diarrhea predominant symptoms (IBS-D) and constipation (IBS-C). Many people can also experience alternating forms of IBS. Regardless of type, symptoms can manifest themselves due to stress, an undiagnosed health issue such as a viral infection or hereditary IBS. Women are more likely to develop IBS than men and they may experience more pronounced difficulties during their menstrual cycles when hormone levels change.

Despite the uncomfortable sensations that IBS can cause, it will not permanently harm the digestive system since it is not a disease. Once you’ve been diagnosed by your doctor, there are a few things we can do to minimize attacks.

Eat smaller meals and consider the “trial by error” method. Some medical professionals have suggested that food consumption for the IBS sufferer is stressful in and of itself. It’s good to note how we feel after eating certain foods. For those who are bothered by dairy items, it’s better to lessen consumption and take a lactose supplement or try to eliminate it completely. Others may complain of feeling unwell after drinking coffee or eating chocolate, so it may be best to avoid caffeinated items altogether.

Include fiber, calming foods and remember to hydrate. Having fruits and vegetables with each meal or a fiber supplement can help overall digestive health and may reduce pain and motility problems. Drinking water and peppermint tea is as equally important as fiber intake. People with IBS can have a productive life with dietary control and relaxation techniques.
