Disability refers to inability to perform your bodily functions in a normal fashion. Disability can make a person feel depressed as they find themselves different than their peers. If you are looking after a disabled child, then you should be careful about the way you raise it. Never make the child feel incapable of performing any task. Challenge the child to perform simpler tasks on his own and slowly graduate to more complicated tasks.
Your child should not develop pity for his situation. Teach him to overcome his disability and live with honor. Never allow your family or friends to show pity or excessive sympathy towards your disabled child because he or she may start living on self pity. It is important to make your child understand very subtly how he is different from others. Tell him his limitations in a practical way and also show him his extraordinary capabilities in other areas. It is a good idea to show them movies or give them books related to lives of normal individuals who have managed to overcome their disability and have carved a niche for themselves in the world. Always explore the potential in your child. Like every other child, your child may have a special talent, probably he may be good in arts or good in music or he may be blessed with a fantastic voice. You should encourage your child to excel in these talents and find solace in them. Even people will start appreciating your kid’s talent and he will develop confidence about himself. There is no better way than increased self esteem and higher morale in overcoming disability. Learn to show your child the brighter side of situations.
